In 2005, Sirleaf defeated soccer legend now president Gerorge Weah, to become Liberia and Africa’s first democratically elected female head of state, and she went on to win reelection in 2011, serving a two six year term that ended on January 22, 2018, when she stepped down in what was Liberia’s first peaceful transfer of democratic power from one elected president to another in 74 years.

Since stepping down as president, Sirleaf continues to receive various honors, including winning the coveted US$5m annual Mo Ibrahim Prize for achievement in African leadership, being inducted into the Hall of Fame of the International Women’s Forum & Leadership Foundation (IWF/LF) in Miami, Florida, the USA. She was also recently named on the advisory board of the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
