MONROVIA, LIBERIA – No doubt, few days of the year are important – one of such being the birthday of a friend or loved one, and whether one wants to admit it or not, we expect a certain level of special treatment when our birthday comes and we also expect happy birthday wishes from those who are important in our lives – so is the case with Liberia’s charming first female Vice President Chief Suakoko Dr. Jewel Howard-Taylor, who clocks 56 years today, as scores of Liberians take to social media to send her cute birthday messages.
Born Jewel Cianeh Howard on January 17, 1963, onto the union of Mr. Moses Y. Howard and Mrs. Nora Giddings-Howard, Veep Howard-Taylor is the great granddaughter of a king of Liberia’s most popular tribe, the Kpelle, King Kerkula Giddings of Sanoyea District, situated in the country’s central region in Bong County.
Vice President Howard-Taylor, an accomplished politician, was elected in 2005 as Bong County first female senator, subsequently gaining reelection in 2014 for a second 9-year term, before being elected along with President George Weah in 2017, as Liberia’s first female Vice President.
Also former First Lady of Liberia, Jewel married former Liberian president Charles Taylor in 1997, but later divorced him in 2016, following the ex-president’s fleeing to exile in Nigeria, which was followed by his subsequent incarceration in a British maximum prison on charges of war crimes and crimes committed against humanity, during neighboring Sierra Leone’s decade-long civil war.
In spite of being stigmatized in many quarters locally and internationally for the reputation of her ex-husband as a ruthless warlord and war crimes convict, Howard-Taylor has succeeded in firmly establishing herself as a formidable political force in Liberia and a highly esteemed state actor.
She attended secondary school at the College of West Africa, from where she obtained a High School Diploma, and then went on to achieve several degrees including Bachelor of Science in Economics, University of Liberia; Masters in Banking and Finance, with honors from the American Institute of Banking; another Masters in Business Administration MBA in Finance, also with distinction from Cuttington University; a law degree, LLB Law, with honors from Louis Arthur Grimes School of Law, University of Liberia; as well as several honorary doctorate degrees in Leadership and Governance from the prestigious Gabriel L. Dennis Foreign Service Institute, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Liberia and the St. Clements University College respectively.
Howbeit, beginning with birthday messages posted on the official Facebook pages of the office of the Liberian vice president and from her media officer, Mr. Solomon Ware, several Liberians are swarming social media with tons of birthday messages and wishes to their Veep on the occasion of her 56th natal day.
“On the occasion marking the 56th birth Anniversary of Hon. Chief Dr. Jewel Howard-Taylor, the First Female Vice President of the Republic and President of the Liberian Senate; the Chief of Staff, Deputies, Specialists, Directors, heads of Units and all employees of the Office of the Vice President of the Republic of Liberia, extend their Congratulations as you mark another milestone in your earthly sojourn,” the birthday message from the Office of the Vice President read.
Staffers of the Vice President’s office continued: “We appreciate your exemplary leadership that has shown us the value of service to others. You are a positive role model and an example of selflessness to this generation, thus becoming someone worthy of emulation. Please keep up the good works, and God will guide and keep you. HAPPY, HAPPY HAPPY BIRTHDAY Madam VP.”
For Mr. Ware, he wrote: “There are two great days in a person’s life – the day we are born and the day we discover why. Happy birthday Liberia’s Vice president Chief Dr Jewel Howard-Taylor. More years to come.”
As at the time of this report, under Mr. Ware’s post, the thread that follows, had garnered dozens of comments from Liberians, with all of them wishing Vice President Howard-Taylor well and stating pleasant things about Liberia’s first female Vice President.
